Introduction

Infectious diseases threats have potentials to kill thousands or even millions people annually. These diseases include influenza, malaria, extremely-drug resistant (XDR) tuberculosis, antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, zoonotic diseases, HIV/AIDS, and many more. The threats can emerge naturally as outbreaks or pandemics. Both occurrences undermine not only patient care and public health, but also national security and integrity. Influenza pandemics, for example, have a long history of devastation in terms of lives lost, hospitalizations, and destabilizing national economies. Health quality in Indonesia have been improved substantially since 1990s. However, these improvements are not homogeneous and a double burden of communicable diseases (CDs) and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) causing increasing pressure on the nations health system. Currently, Indonesia is still grappling with mixed and changing patterns of morbidity, mortality, and disability. In fact, while CDs, i.e. tuberculosis, diarrhea, HIV/AIDS, etc., persist as substantial problems, NCDs, such as diabetes, cerebrovascular disease, and ischaemic heart disease, tend to increase to an alarming level (Mboi N, et. al., Lancet 2018). There are many ascpects should be considered to overcome this big problem.
sadds
In an effort to contribute in providing a better understanding of infectious disease, Institute of Tropical Disease (ITD), Universitas Airlangga, develops strategies to diagnose, prevent, and treat several infectious diseases, i.e. malaria, hepatitis, dengue fever, etc. No single organization, of course, is able to cover this important task. In this regards, ITD has a close research collaboration with Pusat Kesehatan, Tentara Nasional Indonesia (PUSKES TNI), in this subject.
sadds
To disseminate research outcomes resulted from those collaborations, ITD would like to organize an international conference entitled Infectious Diseases, Biothreats, and Military Medicine (INSBIOMM). The conference will discuss a theme of "Latest Perspectives on Infectious Diseases, including Biothreats and Military Medicine." INSBIOMM conference is planned to be held for two days at 27-28 August 2019 in the Rectorate Building, Universitas Airlangga, Kampus C UNAIR, Jl. Mulyorejo, Surabaya 60115, Indonesia. The conference will involve keynote speeches about policy in dealing with infectious diseases, particularly those related to military health. The conference would also include plenary lectures on infectious diseases, biothreats, and military medicines, by expertise in the fields. Furthermore, this conference is designed to facilitate scientists and professionals to share and discuss their research papers, in an international atmosphere, with oral or poster presentations. We also encourage students to present their research achievements. The topics covered in this conference are particularly infectious diseases, biothreats, and military medicines. Yet, the conference also accommodates a broad topics in infectious research, e.g. biochemistry, bioactive natural products, immunology, etc. In order to spread the conference outcomes, selected papers will be published in a SCOPUS-indexed journal.
